February Feature- Meet Amber

Hey All!

I meant to post this feature yesterday, but sleep got in the way lol. This Feature is a tiny special because it is my very own sister. ^_^  I have been helping her with her hair lately so I figured it would be great for her to share her struggles and triumphs with her natural hair.

Where are you from, what are you reppping?

A: Well, I'm From NY! otherwise known as the best city ever. lol j.k No, I'm from the Bronx, but I've lived all over.

When did you decide to go natural?

A: Actually, it wasn't really a decision. One day I just stopped getting perms. It was probably around 2005 ( my freshman year of H.S) and I just never got another one since.

What made you chose Transitioning over going through with a Big Chop?

A: Like I said before, I kind of just fell into transitioning. I learned that term from you lol. My hair has been sort of like a gradual thing. 

Since your decision to go natural, have you experienced any flack or comments from family or friends because of your decision?

A: Oh my goodness. That is the single most annoying comments one can ever hear. I've heard all kind of stuff, from : you look like you got electrocuted, you look like a q-tip. Why doesn't your hair do that(While pointing to a relaxed girl), Can't you fix it? Don''t you ever comb it?....My personal favorite is my mother. She says I look like Michael Jackson from the Wiz. Yup, these are all true. Even my mother makes fun of my afro. Such is life when you're different, I guess.

Has any of those opinions affected how you, if so, in what way?

A: At first it made me want to run straight to the Dominican Hair salon. It felt so weird that people would stare, or always have something to say about. Now, I'm a little better because my boyfriends is very supportive and told me not to let close minded people affect me. So I'm much more confident. Well, you too, because you're my personal stylist. wink.

If you had to describe your hair, how would you?

A: Hmmm, I guess I would say it's curly, and big. It's thick, and I mean thiiick with 3 i's. It definitely has flair, I love my curly afro.

Have you had any difficulties or setbacks since your decision to go natural?

A:  I like twist outs and bantu knots mostly. On a regular day, I just wear it in its natural state. Lately I haven't because I need to cut my ends though.

Do you have any "Go To" products, or a set regimen?

A:  I don't really have any products I use regularly, but I am fond of Shea butter. That provides one of the best shine I have see, and I have dry hair.

What is your staple style?

A: I love what I learned was called Twist-Outs. I gives my big hair soo much definition, and I always get tons of compliments when I wear my hair that way.

What do you love most about your hair, and how does it compare to your relaxed days?

A: I love that my hair is versatile. I can pretty much do anything I want with it. I don't have to pay loads of money as I did when I relaxed it, and It doesn't matter if I get it wet. lol

Is there any tips or tricks you would like to share with someone who is thinking about transitioning?

A: The only suggestion I have for girls trying to transitioning is to MOISTURIZE. My hair had gotten so damaged once when I didn't condition and comb it through it often enough.

Favorite New Hairstyle- Flat Twist Out's

Hey All!

I remember saying that I was going to share my holiday hair with you all, sooo that is what I am here to do!

I originally wanted to do a rod set, (which I am still lusting after) but because I was up late the night before, I had to do a rushed hairstyle, and though I am terrible at doing Flat Twists, it is faster than two strands, and I knew it would take better on dry hair.

All I did was dampen my hair a tiny bit, and used Shea Butter to give my hair a little moisture. I did six Flat Twists all together, and Bantu Knotted the ends, so they would blend with the rest of my hair.

I slept with them, and took them out in the afternoon. They were perfectly stretched, and wavy! My exact desired results. I have to say that I prefer this to my beloved two stranded twist, my hair looked less clumpy and blended.

I even got compliments from my mother, who stands by the creamy crack and constantly picks at me for being natural. So that is a plus in my book. Even my transitioning sister rocked her fro proudly.

Even with being natural for 2 years, I am still discovering what styles work for me! Oh, and I believe my sister did a really chunky twist out, with a side part.

2 Product Reviews- Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Reconstructurizer & Hask Placenta Henna 'n' Placenta Dual Action Pack

I received Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Reconstructurizer as a gift! It was a product that I had been wanting to try for a long time, mainly because it is a 'two-in-one' product. It's main purpose is for it to be used as a heat protectant, but it can also be used as a leave in.

I have tried it as both. Once to blow dry. My blow dryer is not the best (in terms of quality). I have a remington, which is what you call a 'drug store brand', meaning I can find it any CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aide, etc. At some point I will be purchasing a professional blow dryer, but that is what I am rocking with right now.

Prior to use. I went about my wash day routine, shampoo, cowash, dc, oil scalp etc. I used a Deep Conditioner I have never tried before. Hask Placenta Henna 'n' Placenta Dual Action Pack. It states that it  "Strengthens and repairs dry, brittle, lifeless hair." This 'Henna' product does not change hair color. Although eventually, I would like to invest in purchasing some real Henna, for color.

The consistency was very much like creamy petroleum, and it felt waxy going on. It was easy to apply none the less, and the package was just enough to cover my hair thoroughly. I left it on for about an hour, and covered with a plastic bag. I did not use heat. My hair felt nice after rinsing, not super soft, but nice, and it was pretty easy detangling. It is hard to pinpoint the scent with this one, to me it smells like scented crayons. You know the kind Crayola makes. It was nice, not sure if I would repurchase, but for a pack dc, it did a good job. Maybe I will have to try it again to see if I feel any different about it. For now it gets a 3/5.


I sprayed my hair with the Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea, after rinsing out the deep conditioner and oiling my scalp. This product made it easier to blow dry, and my hair did get straighter, near my roots, but it took a little doing with my ends. Again it could be my blow dryer, but to get my ends dried thoroughly, and with ease, I had to respray my ends, and blow dry them. I did this in sections with my ends after getting done with my roots.

The only thing that I was a bit disappointed by, is that it did not give my hair any sheen, but I am sure this coupled with oil sheen, spritz, or simply sealing can fix this. Something else I am not crazy about, is the scent. It smells like cleaning product to me. The smell dissipates quickly, so that too, is not a big issue. It works well as a leave in. This is a spray, and not cream based like my homemade leave in's, so I definitely have to make sure to seal after using this product, or my hair will dry out.

Although I am not crazy about the smell, this product does a great job at straightening my hair in time for heat styles, and works as a leave in, so because of that it get's a 4/5 from me!

I used it again last night, as a leave in, and used my Shealoe to seal, for a twist out. I did about 12 twists, and used Yellow Perm Rods on my ends, so they would be uniform with the rest of my hair. These rods are too small for Rod Sets, so that is mainly what I use them for.

Here is how it came out.

I think I got pretty good results, so I think I will be sticking to this combination for my twist outs!

Dry Two Strand Twist Out

I recently took out the twists I installed in my hair, and wanted to share the results with you guys. I only used my fingers to take the twists out, and it took no more than hour.

Two Strand Twist out Results

I did super tiny two strand twists last Saturday, and decided to untwist them today. I was planning on doing a prepoo subsequently. But I liked the way it looked, so I kept it for the look of today. I did not use any products to untwist, just used my fingers, and slapped a headband on, and the results were that in the picture.







I ordered the Ion Color Brilliance Spray Bottle and  Sally's Wide Tip Color Applicator Bottle, of course they take forever to get here, well, at least in my opinion. So the applicator is what I expected, I like that it has the liquid level on the side, so measurements are done easily. I am not too sure if I like the spray bottle though, the tip screws off, so it's really a cap, and the spray is not really forceful, it kind of just comes out in glops, but I only tried it out with water, so I suppose we'll see.


What really ticked me off is that I also ordered Roux Mendex conditioner, which was 99 cents, which is why I jumped at the chance to purchase it, even though I have not used it before, purely the junkie in me lol. Anyway, order gets here, and it is not in the package, but it it's place is two sample packets Miracle 7 Color Protect Shampoo. (Didn't even have the nerve to send me the conditioner) I was not charged for it, but in the payment sheet, it stated that the item was not available in their warehouse, and is no longer offered on their website, I have got to say, that I am a little bummed, because I was looking forward to trying it out, but I guess I'll be trying out the shampoo next wash day.
