Queen Helene Super Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream (Deep Conditioner) Review

Hey All!

Remember my previous post about not wanting to wash my hair...well I did, and my curls came back immediately, thank the Lord! What I really want to talk about though is this new deep conditioner I have been using. Well it's more like revisited, because I tried it earlier on in my HHJ, and felt so-so about it.

The new deep conditioner is a cholesterol- Queen Helene Super Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream. I have the 907.2g/2 pound one, and it has a pump, which I love, for a reason I'm getting to...

I can't exactly remember how much I paid for this product, but I bought it from Walmart, and I'm pretty sure I got it for less that $7.99 USD, why do I say that, because I am cheap, and have yet to pay $10.00 USD, on any one product!  You can find Cholesterol conditioner, not necessarily this brand, at any BSS or drug store, like Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, etc.  Other brands I have heard of Lustrasilk, Lusti, Hollywood Beauty.

Believe it or not, cholesterol is good for your hair! It is good fat that helps condition and give your hair luster! So this is great for those who have dry/damaged hair!

Now the ingredient's does not sound the best...

Ingredients:  Water (Aqua), Glyceryl Stearate, Mineral Oil, Stearyl Alcohol, Lanolin, Myristamidopropyl, Dimethylamine Phosphate, Cholesterol, Glycerine, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Keratin Amino Acids, Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Methylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Yellow #5 (CI# 19140), Yellow #6 (CI# 15985), Red #40 (CI# 16035), Red #33 (CI# 17200).

But believe me it works! I find that it works best if you mix it with oils, or melted shea butter. That is at least what I have used. My favorite combo is to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO). It leaves me with such soft hair, and it's a lot of product for less than 10 bucks! (It also works nice alone, still soft, just not as soft with additives.) The pump makes it worth the money as well because it's less messy, and allows me to get an eye for how much I'm using.

I like this a lot better than the Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol I use to use.

I have been looking for an affordable, moisturizing, deep conditioner, and this is it! Although I love this conditioner to pieces, it will get a 4/5 from me, only because to I have to add oils to get that suppleness I'm looking for!

Check this product out if you haven't already!

Ultimate Deep Conditioning Challenge 2011

Hey all!

As you all know, I am a member of many hair forums, but Black Hair Planet has to be my favorite. I am running an Ultimate Deep Conditioning Challenge for 20ll (until Dec.10th, 2011).

The purpose of the challenge is to help enforce healthy hair habits for the new year. Deep conditioning is a vital part of healthy hair care, as it helps restore moisture into the hair, or protein, depending on the type of the conditioner you use. (Tip: Conditioners like Hair Mayonnaise, or contains eggs are considered hard protein)

Protein based treatment/conditioner should not be used on a weekly basis, or you may experience protein overload. Protein overload results in excessive shedding/breakage. Too much moisture results in limp, gummy, hair, so you really have to make sure you do not have too much of moisture or protein in your regimen. As well as what is in your leave in's.

Like for instance, my 'Super Moisturizing Homemade Coconut Leave In' can be considered protein based because of the coconut oil. It is okay to use, and alternate between a purely moisturizing leave in. Which is something I learned, I did not realize that my conditioner was protein based, and could not figure out why my hair would sometimes feel hard.

For now I will be alternating between my coconut leave in, and diluted VO5 Moisturizing Milks mixed with Home Health Castor Oil.

( Look out for Soy/Silk/Wheat Proteins, they're not bad by any means, it just means your product contains a bit of protein)

Anyway, getting to the point, the challenge is mainly about just that, finding YOUR balance. Although I think it is best for people to do a hard protein treatment, once every 4-6 weeks, it depends on the person. (Tip: A quick homemade recipe for a hard treatment... Eggs and Mayo, how much of each depends on you, you can also add a bit of conditioner for a thicker consistency) Some people cannot take hard protein, so they will do a light protein instead, or twice a month.

Those are just examples (and suggestions) of what conditioners provide what kind of treatment for your hair. You can also create your own deep conditioners from scratch, or use one of your cowashing conditioners as a base for a dc.

Here are the rules of the challenge
The DC challenge is back in full effect for the new year! The Ultimate Deep Conditioning Challenge 2011, will Begin Monday, January 10th, 2011.

To Join: Please post a starting picture if you can, or just list the two deep conditioners (protein & moisturizing) that you will be using. You have the option of switching any of your two main dc's, until Monday, January 24th, 2011. Please just be sure to post what you will be switching two, so I can update the list.

Also while signing up, let us know a few things about your hair, ie. whether you are relaxed, texlaxed, transitioning, or natural. Also your hair length, and whether you will be deep conditioning with/without heat, or using a cap. Again, listing conditioners that you will be using is mandatory.

Check In dates will be the 10th of every 3rd month.
Thursday March 10th, 2011
Friday June 10th, 2011
Saturday September 10th, 2011
Saturday December 10th, 2011

  2. You can deep condition on wet or dry hair (whatever your preference)
  3. Deep condition with heat for at least 30 minutes
  4. If deep conditioning without heat, leave it in for at least 1-2 hours
  5. You can make any additions to your deep conditioner, just post what you added(Oils, honey, eggs, or any ingredient of your choosing)
  6. You can also make your own deep conditioners
  7. Passes are to be used when you do not use one of the two conditioners you listed to be your main conditioners for this challenge
  8. You are allowed 2 passes a month.
  9. Please post when a Pass is used

You can join on BHP from the link provided above, or simply just comment that you will be participating.

For now my main Dc's for this challenge will be LUSH Retread & Tropical Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil Hair Mayonnaise Protein Conditioner. I may be changing again by the 24th, we'll see.

I will have to use a pass this week, because of my braids, but I will be able to start participating next week, as I plan to start taking down my braids next Friday (Jan. 21st), which I am super excited about, but also nervous. I will also be doing a strand test to see if I have gained any growth in the past two months.

I hope you all will consider deep conditioning at least once a week, if you are not already!

Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol Deep Conditioner

I purchased this product because I was searching for a moisturizing deep conditioner, but also reasonably priced. I paid about $3.50 USD at CVS, and comes in a 20 oz jar.

This product is suppose to " super shine & moisturize" and is for damaged hair.

The directions says that this product can be used as a cowash conditioner if used 2-3 minutes, as well as a deep conditioner if used for 10 minutes, and hair is wrapped in a moist towel.

I use this product as a deep conditioner, and I use it for an half hour to an hour, and wear a plastic (shower) cap, while the product is in. I believe they tell you  to use a moist towel, because this conditioner is meant to lather, when mixed with water. Again I do not use the moist towel, I just put the product throughout my hair, until it is saturated, and then add warm water, and then I massage it in, so it lathers, and then I put on my cap. This product has a sweet smell to it, like a candy, can't say a particular one though. The consistency is sort of like something that was pureed, it is also thick. But it changes once you add water. Which is sort of slick. I like the ingredients, because most of them are natural, and promote growth. It also leaves my hair smooth.

Ingredients: DEIONIZED WATER(AQUA), CETEARYL ALCOHOL, PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, STEARALKONUM CHLORIDE, CETYL ALCOHOL, STEARYL ALCOHOL, OLIVE OIL, PROPYLENE GYCOL, GLYCERIN, MINERAL OIL, TEA TREE OIL, JOJOBA OIL, AVOCADO OIL, COCONUT OIL, EGG PROTEIN, CHOLESTEROL, ALOE VERA EXTRACT, CALENDULA EXTRACT, LEMON EXTRACT, ROSEMARY EXTRACT, GREAT BURDOCK EXTRACT, IVY EXTRACT, PINE EXTRACT, SAGE EXTRACT, WATERCRESS EXTRACT, CHAMOMILE EXTRACT, WHITE NETTLE EXTRACT, CAPUCINE EXTRACT, FRAGRANCE, METHYL PARABEN, PROPYL PARABEN, DIAZOLIDNYL UREA, DMDM HYDANTOIN, DISODIUM EDTA, D & C YELLOW #10, FD & C YELLOW #5, FD & C BLUE#1, FD & C RED#33.

Rating:4/5- Only because it is a bit messy.
